This ten-digit number identifies such info as the publisher, printed language and book version, book price and other relevant information. Having an ISBN number is a must for authors who are looking to have their books visible and available in databases, stores and libraries. Should I purchase an ISBN from Amazon, IngramSpark, Lulu or some other self publishing platform? Short answer...it depends. Many platforms and "vanity" publishers often offer ISBNs for a fee or for free. Since the ISBN identifies the origin and the publishing details of the book, it may be in the best interest for Indie Authors who actively upload and manage their book titles, to purchase an ISBN. This will give the author ownership and flexibility when it comes to their number. Indie Authors may choose to use their own name or create a publishing brand. Creating a publishing brand, even if only for personal titles, establishes credibility. How do I purchase an ISBN? ISBN numbers can only by purchased from Bowker via myidentifiers.com. NEVER purchase an ISBN from a third party that is not affiliated with you or your book. Each version of the book will need a different ISBN. The cost for 1 ISBN is $125 and $295 for 10. However, IBPA (International Book Publishers Association) members qualify for discounts on ISBNs and other valuable services and resources in exchange for an annual membership.
